COURSE STRUCTURE

This course is structured to provide a framework for your own individual experience and practice to unfold. You will be embarking on your own creative journey whilst being held, supported, challenged and guided through a series of suggestions, prompts, briefs and workshops. We will work as a collective of practitioners with no hierarchical structure. My role as artist and facilitator is to design the course content in a way that allows us to share a powerful unified group experience whilst nurturing individual practices.

Starting with a three-day intensive (one of three in person gatherings), we will explore intuitive approaches to art making. Sancreed village hall will become an artist studio. We will transform it into a place for testing, thinking, reflecting and learning from each other. Materials will be provided, paper unfolded across tables.  We will embark on a process of exploration, both individually and collectively. We will hold workshops, peer to peer discussions, artist talks and share inspirational texts that connect to our making practice.

Following on from this you will receive a 1-1 tutorial, a focused conversation on ways forward and how to develop your practice. There will be four 1-1 tutorials throughout the year.

Through a series of online lectures, Foot Notes, we will explore the deep mythologies held in the land and consider how our inner experience meets the outer world.

Between sessions, you’ll receive fortnightly briefs, prompts, and suggested reading or viewing to help you stay connected to your work. These act as gentle structures to support momentum, particularly when things feel uncertain or stuck.

Online lectures from artists and academics will offer fresh perspectives and new ways of thinking.

In Person- three day intensive Walking, Making and Thinking will start with a three day intensive in Sancreed village hall. We will turn the hall into a studio for testing and experimenting with intuitive making practices informed by walking and immersing ourselves in the surrounding area. Artists will be invited to run workshops in making plant based pigments from materials we gather as well book binding so that we can start with making our own hand bound journals. Materials and food will be provided.

In-person- two day peer to peer sharing Half way through the year we will meet at Sancreed village hall to share our work, receive peer to peer feedback, discuss ideas, listen to artist talks and revisit the sacred landscape surrounding Sancreed. Food will be provided.

In-person- three day reflective journaling The year culminates in a three day group gathering at Sancreed Village Hall. We will share and reflect on how we have worked together and stuff that has emerged from our individual practice. We will think together about how we move forward and take this shared experience with us.  Food will be provided.

Online Lecture Series Throughout the year there will be a series of lectures (6 online 1.5-hour lectures) and conversations with artists and thinkers whose work is rooted in place. We will look at how artists think, work, write, perform, and question, and how these ecological approaches shape their practice. The emphasis is on ways of working and ways of seeing that can feed directly into your own practice.

  • Ecology of walking

  • Mythology and ritual in place

  • Site, spirit, and poetics of place

  • Queerness and landscape

  • Feminism and landscape

  • Radical politics and wild places

Four Individual Studio Mentoring Sessions You will receive four 1.5-hour online sessions with artist and senior lecturer Lucy Willow.  These sessions are designed to integrate the content of the course into a focused discussion on the development of individual practice and how it feeds into your work, provide critical feedback, conceptual guidance, portfolio development, or simply a space to think aloud about your work.

Two Online Group Seminars  At two points in the year, the group will gather for online seminars where you share work, give and receive peer feedback, and deepen your critical thinking. These sessions build a supportive community of practice.

Online Resources You will have access to a set of online resources, including recorded lectures, reading suggestions, and prompts to support moments of uncertainty or creative block. These materials will be added to throughout the year and are intended to offering continuity, guidance, and a sense of belonging within a shared creative community.
